adidas vs. Black Lives Matter is a Thing
If it's one thing adidas is gonna do, it's protect the Three Stripes logo. As they should. Two months ago the brand was in litigation with Thom Browne over its four-striped bar logo, claiming it was too close for comfort.
adidas ended up unsuccessful in the suit, which was pretty much expected, but the brand succeeded in letting the world know that it is not to be played with.
The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation is the latest to garner adidas' attention after attempting to copyright a yellow logo consisting of three bars. (See below.)
According to The Fashion Law, the organization "lodged an application to register a mark that consist of three horizontal yellow stripes for use on bags, apparel and online retail store services featuring apparel, headwear, etc."
adidas' lawsuit comes as no surprise given the similarities, but what was even more predictable was the public's response to the news. Commenters were quick to point out that adidas had previously claimed to be supporters of the Black Lives Matter Movement, though others sided with adidas, given the near identical branding.
adidas seems to not want the smoke either way and released a statement withdrawing the suit, pledging to "withdraw its opposition to the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation’s trademark application as soon as possible," without any other deets. Take a look at the t-shirts above and drop a comment if you think adidas was overreacting or if BLM should have seen this coming...
