Let's take a second to talk about the Green Carpet Awards that was held in Los Angeles yesterday. For those that are not familiar with the Green Carpet Awards – the GCFA kicked off Oscar weekend with its commitment to honoring fashion brands and houses that are dedicated to sustainable fashion techniques.
Livia Firth, Film Maker and founder of the Green Carpet Awards stated,
“This is not a celebration of an industry with the power to distract. Rather, it’s the recognition of an industry that needs to leverage its power for people and planet. Fashion is a full spectrum industry, touching billions of lives across the globe and reliant on a healthy biosphere. We must use that reach and power to bring purposeful change.”
This year attendees included Heidi Klum, Cate Blanchett and Jodie Turner-Smith to name a few. This was the first time that the awards held its programming on the West Coast and the fashionistas came out in droves.
The Tom Ford Innovation Prize
Tom Ford in partnership with Lonely Whale is the only global competition focused on creating scalable and biologically degradable alternatives to traditional thin-film plastic polybags.
The Tom Ford Plastic Innovation Prize hoped to shake things up this year— revealing three petrochemical-free prize winners at the GCA:
The prize winners were:
Sway, an American firm creating a seaweed-based, regenerative material.

Zerocircle, an India-based company making wildlife and ocean-safe packaging materials from locally cultivated seaweed that will dissolve harmlessly in the ocean after use.

Notpla, a London-based start-up that renders seaweed into a natural-membrane packaging.

The designer revealed the winners upon receiving “The Eco-Age Visionary Award,” himself.
We love to see fashion finally honoring those that are trying to limit their environmental footprint and taking the necessary steps on sustaining the exponential waste created from fast fashion and luxury brands alike.
