Big Freedia, Lil Wayne, and Boyfriend Link for “El Niño”
The fourth track from Big Freedia’s Central City album.
New Orleans, stand up. Bounce queen and LGBTQ icon Big Freedia is bringing even more hype to her sophomore album with a newly released track featuring Lil Wayne and emerging talent Boyfriend.
Dedicated to hurricane season and a New Orlean turnup, “El Niño” isn’t just a party track/ excellent putting-on-makeup-music. Freedia describes the song in an Instagram post writing, “Hey y’all I’m so excited to announce my new single! El Niño is about going hard in any storms that come in your life and conquering them! It’s one of my favorite songs on my upcoming album Central City!”
She goes on to call out her collaborators and the city of NOLA saying, “[EL Niño] features my longtime collaborator Boyfriend, and it’s also my first collab with Lil Wayne who I’ve wanted to work with for a long time. We put it down for our city, and this song is gonna have everyone blowin' down! and those who know how to navigate”
As expected, Lil Wayne kills his feature, rapping, “I’m bout to go El- f*ckin Niño/ I’m bout to go Hurricane Katrina, the top of my cup light purple looking just like Megan Rapinoe.” Pure poetry.
Boyfriend provides vocals on the hook, delivering a very sassy — and very TikTok-able— “This bitch bout to be gone with the wiiind/ Comin’ at ya Category 10.”
Aside from the track being playlist-worthy, our fingers are crossed that a partnership between one of the best rappers alive and an openly gay artist will be a move toward inclusion in the Hip Hop industry.
Look out for Central City to release June 23, though “El Niño” is streamable now on Apple Music and Spotify. Watch the YouTube visual here and drop a comment with your favorite line from the track.
